Holland Webb: Thank you for inviting me. Writing was my dream from way back because I loved to read. As a kid, I sat with my nose stuck between the pages of a book and my imagination fully engaged.  When I was a teenager, I had dreams of being the next Michener or Clavell, traveling the world and writing powerful novels set in fascinating locations.

How Jamie Thomson Quit His 9-to-5 Job And Built His Copywriting Agency Step-By-Step

Haris Halkic: Hi Jamie, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Jamie Thomson: Hi Haris. Thanks for asking me to be a part of these great interviews. I got started in copywriting from working as a freelance journalist. In my last couple of years at university (studying English Literature and French), I worked freelance for a few newspapers in Scotland. However, my timing wasn’t great and it was tough trying to secure a full-time job in the industry. So, I started working in various non-writing related jobs and kept writing on the side.

I started an online business in the private tutoring space in my spare time and I wrote and published all the content and resources. My writing must have sparked the curiosity of other companies and I started getting requests to write for their websites.

Freelance Copywriter And Book Author Chris Worth On How To Build A Sustainable Copywriting Business

Haris: Hi Chris, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting? Please, tell us more about your story.

Chris: I’m from a very, very small place, and wanted to live my life in a much, much bigger one. So I dropped out of school early and travelled a lot – ended up in Tokyo completing cargo documents for import and exports, what these days you’d call “microcontent”!

I learned about international trade and technology products – real down-and-dirty stuff, battery packs and adapter plugs – which led to a job in Hong Kong with a large technology trade publisher. Another couple of years later I joined the ad agency Ogilvy & Mather in Singapore. Yet more years on I won WPP’s “Atticus” award, which took me to Paris! In those years I wrote something like 200 campaigns, many of which ran in multiple markets in different languages.

A story about a man who was once frustrated

There was this guy.

He wanted to learn internet marketing. He was young and knew this stuff is the future.

So he set the goal to master online marketing.

But one question preyed on his mind.

Where can I really learn the profession of internet marketing?

Since the offered college degrees were crap, he thought.

They just can’t cope with the speed of the internet.

“I gotta go where the pros are, the guys that really make money with this. Agencies that specialize in online marketing. That’s where the game is being played by the pros – not by amateurs.”

And that’s what he did.
