From Employee To Freelance Copywriter: Ryan Carr’s 3 Best Tips

freelance copywriterHaris Halkic: Hi Ryan, thanks a lot for agreeing to share some tips on copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting? Please tell me more about your story.

Ryan Carr: At the time, I was eking out a living teaching lighting and screenwriting classes. Then, a friend of mine introduced me to copywriting. I guess it never occurred to me that they actually pay people to write all those sales letters you get in the mail, lol.

I’ve always loved to write so I thought it would be a perfect fit. To get started I did some pro-bono work for a non-profit. That led to a job as a grant writer. After a year I felt burned out and decided to go freelance by specializing as a financial copywriter.

How To Make The Dream Of Retirement Through Writing Come True – Copywriter Penny Hunt

Penny HuntHaris Halkic: Hi Penny, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background.

Penny Hunt: My pleasure.

Haris Halkic: Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Penny Hunt:  I have always enjoyed writing and aced my English and writing classes in school. After high school, I knew college was not my calling. The thought of it literally made me nauseous.

All I really wanted to be when I grew up was a wife and a good mom to our family. But, sadly, when I graduated, I didn’t have a husband candidate waiting in the wings. (I knew who I wanted to marry, and we dated for a year and a half in high school but broke up before my senior year. More to come.)

How To Start At Zero And Succeed As A Freelance Copywriter – Matt Ambrose

Haris Halkic: How you got started in copywriting. Please, tell me more about your story.

Matt Ambrose: Ever since primary school I can remember telling teachers I was going to be a writer. But after graduating reality set in and I found myself jumping from job to job doing whatever paid the most money.

The turning point came when I was sat in an interview for a buyer’s assistant position. When they told me what the job entailed my enthusiasm fell through the floor. I asked whether there was any writing involved, they said “no”, some tumbleweed blew past, and that was the end of that.

When I got home I jumped online to work out what I could do with an English and History degree, found out about copywriting and bingo bango became a freelance copywriter.

“Freelance Copywriting Needs To Be Part Of Your Lifestyle, Not Just A Job.” – Grant Wood

Freelance WritingHaris Halkic: Hi Grant, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Grant Wood: Hi Haris, it’s a pleasure and a privilege for me to share my story with you.

Copywriting actually found me! I obtained a B.A. degree, in 2008, from the University of Cape Town with majors in English literature and social anthropology. I then went on to get a diploma in journalism at Varsity College in 2010 (also in Cape Town.)

I was lucky enough to land an internship at Sports Illustrated magazine during my studies. The watershed moment came when I saw my first piece of work published in the issue of April 2009.

How To Get High-Paying Clients Through Cold-Pitching – Interview With Freelance Copywriter Cyndyl McCutcheon

ghostwriter CyndylHaris Halkic: Hi Cyndyl, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Cyndyl McCutcheon: Hi Haris! Thanks for the opportunity. Copywriting has always been a craft that I’ve dabbled in at some of my previous full-time jobs, though I can’t say that I considered myself an expert back then. Whenever I mentioned to an employer that I could write, copy somehow always found its way into my lap.

I suppose my transition to a focus on freelance copywriting began with the Six-Figure Freelancer. I joined the Facebook community to connect with other freelancers, and it turned out that the group admins were copywriters earning over six figures. I remember signing up for the group, and one of the questions they asked was why I wanted to join. I said, “Because I want to know how you make six figures doing this!” And everything else is history.

Consistent Communication Is The Most Important Success Factor In Freelance Copywriting – Interview With Dave Schafer

Dave Schafer: Thanks for the opportunity, Haris! I love talking about copy and freelancing, so it’s my pleasure.

I’ve always loved to read, write, and tell stories, but I actually sort of fell into copywriting, which it seems is true for many. My background was in retail management, but I left my job so that my wife could take a gig in a new city. For a while I did the stay-at-home dad thing, and I was looking for a way to make some extra cash in the evenings. I realized freelance writing was a thing, and the rest is history.

How Jamie Thomson Quit His 9-to-5 Job And Built His Copywriting Agency Step-By-Step

Haris Halkic: Hi Jamie, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Jamie Thomson: Hi Haris. Thanks for asking me to be a part of these great interviews. I got started in copywriting from working as a freelance journalist. In my last couple of years at university (studying English Literature and French), I worked freelance for a few newspapers in Scotland. However, my timing wasn’t great and it was tough trying to secure a full-time job in the industry. So, I started working in various non-writing related jobs and kept writing on the side.

I started an online business in the private tutoring space in my spare time and I wrote and published all the content and resources. My writing must have sparked the curiosity of other companies and I started getting requests to write for their websites.

Interview With Fiona Gardiner On How To Design Your Life With Freelance Copywriting

Haris: Hi Fiona, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting? Please, tell us more about your story.

Fiona: My start in copywriting was very random and it’s accurate to say I “fell” into it. I left my last corporate role at the end of 2017 and planned on taking the Christmas holidays to re-evaluate my career.

I had a list of requirements:  work from home part-time as I have a 2-year-old son, do something I enjoyed which utilised my skills and experience in sales and marketing, get paid well and have flexibility. Not too much to ask surely??

As I was pondering my list of demands, my best friend asked me to help with some content marketing for her business, and while I was doing this I also saw a 1-day a week copywriter job advert in a women’s business forum. It reinforced there was a real demand for this kind of contract work and I started to consider the option of freelancing for several companies instead of having one full time job and employer.

Freelance Copywriter André Spiteri Shares His Best Tips On Getting Clients And Writing Copy

Haris Halkic: Hi André, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting? Please, tell us more about your story.

André Spiteri: Like many others, I fell into it by accident. I don’t think any kid says “I want to be a copywriter when I grow up!” I certainly didn’t (I didn’t even know it was a viable career option, in fact). I did have secret ambitions of becoming a full-time writer, but as usually happens, my life took a totally different turn.

Long story short, I have a legal background, but it never felt like a good fit. Eventually, I got sick of it, quit my job and moved to London, where I started writing for a blog. That’s when it all clicked for me. I had finally found what I wanted to do with my life.

Haris Halkic: How did you transition to freelance copywriting from your previous job? What’s your best piece of advice to someone who is employed and wants to become a freelance copywriter?
