Melissa Williams: I’ve been a writer all my life, but it wasn’t until after college that I started copywriting. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of a copywriter before I started freelancing at a PR Firm and started writing press releases and product descriptions.

I started working as a real estate journalist for a daily newspaper before moving into the newsroom. Jefferson Vinall:

I was looking for a portable income, where I could earn a living from anywhere.

I came across an ad from American Writers and Artists Inc. (AWAI) and thought that looked interesting. But, I have a suspicious mind, so I didn’t jump in at first. It took me a while, and a few more of their ads before I decided to spend the money and give them a try. That was in 2014.

I had (and still have) another freelance business, so studying their Accelerated Program took longer than expected. In fact, I had the program for about six months before I even started it.

Nikki Sorensen Evans: I have a degree in journalism with a minor in English. I am a member of the journalism honor society, Sigma Delta Chi (SDX) and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

For nearly twenty years, I used my media training to help nonprofits in their media, marketing and public awareness programs. I was trained by Toastmasters International in public speaking. I helped nonprofits set up speakers’ bureaus to aid in outreach and awareness.

I come from a marketing background and in my previous roles I wrote a fair bit of content – newsletters, blogs and website copy, etc. I realised it was the writing ‘bit’ of marketing I particularly enjoyed. I didn’t know copywriting existed as a job at the time…until I did some online browsing and found a course called The Copywriting Apprentice. This opened up the world of copywriting as a career and I completed the course in late 2016.
