Meghan Thomson Shares Tips On Successful Networking & How To Beat Writer’s Block

Haris Halkic: Hi Meghan, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting? Please, tell me more about your story.

Meghan Thomson: Thank you for the opportunity!

I was an account manager at an employer branding agency in London, but used to go home every night and write – about things I observed in my day, random stuff that popped into my head; anything really. I couldn’t stop writing. And so, I started approaching people to write for free.

The first article I wrote was about Richard Branson’s exclusive 5-star resort in the Kruger National Park, in South Africa. I’d never been there, but I wrote like I did. I then wrote an article for an expat publication in the UK. And when I moved to my agency’s Sydney office at the end of 2006, there was a copywriting role going so I applied for it and got it.

How To Make The Dream Of Retirement Through Writing Come True – Copywriter Penny Hunt

Penny HuntHaris Halkic: Hi Penny, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background.

Penny Hunt: My pleasure.

Haris Halkic: Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Penny Hunt:  I have always enjoyed writing and aced my English and writing classes in school. After high school, I knew college was not my calling. The thought of it literally made me nauseous.

All I really wanted to be when I grew up was a wife and a good mom to our family. But, sadly, when I graduated, I didn’t have a husband candidate waiting in the wings. (I knew who I wanted to marry, and we dated for a year and a half in high school but broke up before my senior year. More to come.)

Freelance WritingHaris Halkic: Hi Grant, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips on copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting. Please, tell us more about your story.

Grant Wood: Hi Haris, it’s a pleasure and a privilege for me to share my story with you.

Copywriting actually found me! I obtained a B.A. degree, in 2008, from the University of Cape Town with majors in English literature and social anthropology. I then went on to get a diploma in journalism at Varsity College in 2010 (also in Cape Town.)

I was lucky enough to land an internship at Sports Illustrated magazine during my studies. The watershed moment came when I saw my first piece of work published in the issue of April 2009.

Interview With Freelance Copywriter Kaiden Laverty On How To Get Clients To Come To You

Haris: Hi Kaiden, thanks a lot for agreeing to share your best tips copywriting and your background. Let’s start with how you got started in copywriting? Please, tell us more about your story.

Kaiden: Hi Haris, thanks for inviting me along to take part! It will sound very cliché, but I have been writing since I was very little – poems, scripts etc. I have genuinely always known that writing is what I want to do. After I graduated from university, my partner and I had our first child and I put my career on hold to become a stay-at-home Dad. When I felt ready to return to work, I had a huge gap in my CV and absolutely no-one would hire me, so I hired myself! Overnight, I went freelance and I haven’t looked back since.

Haris: Do you have any advice for someone who wants to do the same and become a freelance copywriter, either directly from a job or after  a longer break?
